Disc Filtration Technology for Industrial Applications

Disc filtration technology is based on a series of grooved plastic discs, stacked and compressed on a specially designed spine, producing a matrix of consecutive crossing points which trap the particles. This technology provides a greater area for retention of organic matter by providing surface and depth filtration.

Disc filtration advantages 

Disc filtration is suitable for a wide range of applications, including the agricultural, municipal and industrial sectors. Here are just some of the advantages this technology offers:

  • High dirt holding capacity – Less frequent flushing is needed due to the discs’ ability to hold more particulate matter.
  • Corrosion resistance – Since the filter body and discs are constructed from polymeric materials, these filters offer excellent corrosion resistance.
  • Low operating pressure – Disc filters are capable of handling very low pressures, with a minimal operating pressure of 0.8 bar (12 psi) in filtration mode and 1.5 bar (22 psi) in flushing mode (depending on filtration degree).
  • Modularity – Easily adaptable to various installation locations and configurations. 

When to choose disc filtration

Disc filtration can be used in almost any application, however, since the filtration element is polymeric, disc filters are perfectly suited especially in aggressive water situations (seawater, high chemical levels, etc.). Here are just some examples:

Nozzle protection

Spray nozzles are used throughout industrial manufacturing processes and deteriorate over time. This can affect production efficiency, product quality, increase maintenance costs and impact revenue. The best approach is to protect nozzles by installing filtration to reduce the particles that can cause erosion and clogging of the feed water.

Intake water

Intake water is used by industrial facilities from various sources such as rivers, surface water, groundwater, municipal water and others. It requires filtration to guarantee a continuous and stable supply of quality water while ensuring process flow and minimum downtime.

Sidestream

When heat transfer surfaces are clean, cooling tower systems are the most efficient. As cooling towers operate outdoors, they are vulnerable to dirt and debris which can cause scaling, fouling, and microbiological activity.

Full stream

Full stream filtration directly protects heat exchangers and chillers by installing a coarse filter on the discharge side of the pump (typically 100-500 microns) and finer filtration to protect equipment such as nozzles, heat exchangers, etc. Used mainly in plastic extrusion factories and metal rolling mills since the water comes into direct contact with the finished product.

Heat exchanger protection

Heat exchangers are essential in manufacturing facilities where their efficiency is critical for process stability. Filtration installed upstream from the heat exchanger reduces suspended solids and debris, leading to less scaling, less fouling and less biological growth.

Pumps seal protection

Particles with hard exteriors can cause damage that requires seal and/or bearings replacement and leads to costs incurred by labor and spare parts. Filtration is important for protecting pump seals and bearings, as it removes these particles.

Process/service water

Process water is used in manufacturing, and it can directly affect product quality. A continuous and stable water supply is key to obtaining efficient production and reducing scrap and downtime. Controlling the required process water quality relies on proper filtration equipment to ensure optimal processes.

Reclaim/reuse water

Water reuse and water reclamation refer to treated effluent used for another purpose. Filtration and treating industrial wastewater for reuse or utilizing reused filtered wastewater can save significant costs.

Pre UF / MF

To protect and improve the integrity of membranes, and to maximize their performance, effective prefiltration is essential.

Injection water

Water injection is where water is injected into the oil field to increase pressure and production, and to improve oil recovery rates. Produced water, contaminated with hydrocarbons and solids, is often used as injection water. Seawater is a source for offshore production facilities and intake is placed at a sufficient depth to reduce the concentration of algae. Both the produced water and the seawater require filtration.

Amiad’s Spin KlinTM disc technology

Spin KlinTM disc technology operates using thin, color-coded discs of a specific micron size. The discs are grooved on both sides, in opposite directions, creating a series of crossing points which form multiple particle traps.
